KYO-YAKI, KYOTO POTTERY EXPERIENCE

Kyo-yaki (京 kyo Kyoto, 焼 yaki fired) was born in the 17th century and it refers to ceramics made in Kyoto, hence it it can be called also Kyo-ware or Kyoto-ware.It is also named “kiyomizu-yaki” (kiyomizu-ware) referring to the pottery made in the area near Kiyomizudera Temple in Kyoto. Kyoto pottery is known for its large variety of techniques, its elegance and versatility, in fact it can be both rustic and well decorated. Decorations often depict nature, Zen Buddhism and literature. Moreover, Kyoto pottery has a relationship both with ikebana and tea ceremony, other two important aspect of Japanese culture. Thanks to this amazing experience you will learn the basic skills for the pottery-making process and create your own masterpiece under the guidance of an expert craftsman, who will assist you throughout the whole process, from “kikumomi” (pressing clay by hands) to the glazing step, which gives pottery a smooth surface after firing.
