Shamisen Experience

In our recent workshop, we hosted a special Shamisen experience event! 🎵✨

Participants included first-timers, music lovers, and those curious about Japanese traditional culture.

Our instructor for the day was Ms. Chieko Hiramatsu, a professional Shamisen and Hauta (short lyrical song) performer,
who also stages solo storytelling performances across Japan.

The first part of the event featured an up-close live performance by Ms. Hiramatsu.
Her rich voice and the resonant sound of the Shamisen truly captivated the audience.

Next, we enjoyed an engaging lecture about the history of the Shamisen and its unique characteristics:
🎵 How did the Shamisen arrive in Japan?
🎵 How do different skins affect the sound?
🎵 Did you know that the Shamisen also has a percussive quality?

Many were surprised to learn that the sound of the Shamisen changes depending on the type of skin used!
Everyone was fascinated by the depth of this traditional Japanese instrument.

In the second half, it was time to try playing the Shamisen!

Using special beginner-friendly Shamisens, participants took on the challenge of performing Sakura Sakura (a well-known Japanese folk song).

“It looks easy, but it’s surprisingly tricky!” many said

but the joy of producing your own Shamisen sound was evident on everyone’s faces.

The event concluded with a group performance, where all participants played together in harmony.

This experience offered a deep dive into the charm of the Shamisen — not only listening to its beautiful sound, but also feeling its resonance with your own hands.

A heartfelt thank you to all our participants and to Ms. Hiramatsu for this wonderful cultural experience!
