Syakuhachi (Japanese Bamboo Flute)Experience
On June 28th, we welcomed shakuhachi master Sozan Kato and his student Mr. Sosai for a special cultural workshop!

The event began with a live performance of “Take” (Bamboo)
– a beautiful shakuhachi duet that instantly drew everyone in with its clear, calming sound.
We then learned about the shakuhachi’s rich history:
・Its name comes from its length: “1 shaku 8 sun” (about 54.5cm)
・Today, shakuhachi are made not only from bamboo, but also resin and even 3D printing!
・Originally part of ancient court music, it later became a tool for Zen monks and samurai practice.

Participants were amazed by the variety of sounds this simple 5-hole flute could create from warm, vibrato tones to bright highs and rich lows.
In the hands-on session, everyone had a chance to try the instrument.
With kind guidance from Mr. Kato, many guests managed to produce sound quickly, and even played “Mary Had a Little Lamb” together at the end!

We also enjoyed live performances, from classical to jazz-style shakuhachi pieces.
It was a soothing, unforgettable experience.
Thank you to everyone who joined us! 🌿
