Okinawan Eisa Experience
Okinawan Eisa Experience in Scorching Nagoya – July 26
On July 26, under the blazing summer heat of Nagoya, we hosted an Okinawan Eisa Experience, where the powerful sounds of the drums echoed through the venue!
We were honored to welcome the members of Ryukyu Koku Matsuri Daiko (Tokai Region) as our instructors, who shared the beauty and spirit of Eisa with us!

Eisa is a traditional Okinawan performing art, originally held during the Bon Festival to welcome and send off the spirits of ancestors. With drums, songs, and dances, people of all ages express their gratitude and respect for their ancestors.
Today, Eisa has evolved into a dynamic form of entertainment that captivates audiences both in Japan and around the world.

During the workshop, we learned about the background of Eisa. The different types of drums, the meaning behind the dances, and the cultural significance.
Then came the highlight: a live performance right before our eyes!
The powerful, rhythmic movements combined with the deep, resonating drumbeats filled the room with energy and excitement!
Next, it was time for participants to try it out themselves!
After learning the basic steps and gradually adding the drum rhythms, everyone began to master the fundamentals.
Although many found it challenging to play the drum while dancing at the same time, their enthusiasm and bright smiles were unforgettable!
Remarkably, most participants, many of whom were experiencing Eisa for the first time, were able to perform an entire song by the end of the session. Truly impressive!
The day concluded with a sense of unity, accomplishment, and joy, leaving the room buzzing with energy and smiles all around.

A heartfelt thank you to the members of Ryukyu Koku Matsuri Daiko Tokai Region and to everyone who joined us for this unforgettable day!
